Understanding Indigenous worldviews, respecting other ways of knowing (IK/TK), and how Indigenous rights, socio-cultural values, traditional resources and land use practices may be impacted by other activities on their territories, are all integral to assessing the extent and significance of potential impacts.  This information also demonstrates to government agencies why culturally relevant and inclusive thresholds and criteria should be included in monitoring environmental health and land management plans.

For the organization, cultural studies such as land use, knowledge, and heritage, or cumulative effects provide additional value.  They build on information used to identify conflicting land use for industry consultation.  Carrying out studies of meaning to the community means having a community-based and participatory approach, where the community directs the study, maintains ownership, is actively engaged and involved in the process, builds capacity, and provides an immediate beneficial deliverable that gives back to the community in addition to fulfilling external requirements.
